Discover SMI

Speciaal Metaal Industrie (SMI) was founded in 1980 by Jelle Jelsma and Gabe Spijksma. Mr. Spijksma is the father of the current managers Bauke and Bert Spijksma. The company started out small, with a machining and assembly department, but has grown considerably since. In 2004 a sheet metal shop, SMI Plaatwerk, was formed.

The companies are each specialised in their own area of expertise and can be distinguished on size, volume of products and series. While the larger unique products are produced in Dokkum, is SMI Plaatwerk more specialised in smaller series projects. SMI Verspaning focuses on small to mid-sized series of parts while SMI Maatwerk focuses on the construction and engineering of large projects of steel, stainless steel and aluminium. The different departments of SMI are placed in the market as SMI Groep since 2005. The market approach is offering the individual specialisations separately and combined. SMI is active in the Dutch market, as well as in international markets, for example in Germany and Belgium.
